Kennebec County Youth Advisory Board

The Kennebec County Youth Advisory Board (KC YAB) is committed to promoting substance use prevention and creating a safe and healthy community for young people. This is primarily accomplished through advocacy, education, engagement, and collaboration with community leaders, organizations, and youth.

Who Should Join? Youth…

  • Between the ages of 12-18

  • From both rural and urban areas

  • Who have succeeded in school as well as those who have struggled

  • Who is part of a school system (public, charter, private, semi-private), as well as those who are homeschooled. 

  • Representing different genders, religious or spiritual affiliations, sexual orientation, race/ethnicities, and socioeconomic status.

  • Who care about making a difference for young people in their community.

Attend one 30-minute Zoom meeting a week

Attend one monthly in-person meeting*

Actively participate in meetings and KC YAB events

Central District Maine Prevention Network Coalition

The Central District (Kennebec/Somerset Counties) MPN Coalition includes representatives from 13 sectors who provide expertise and guidance on primary and secondary prevention activities and strategies implemented within their local communities, as well as environmental strategies aimed at enhancing systems to promote overall health and well-being.

The coalition focuses on the three following areas:

Substance Use Prevention

Tobacco Prevention

Healthy Eating, Active Living

The 13 sectors are:

Youth-serving organizations

Harm reduction

Local human services

Businesses

Parents

Faith communities

Youth

Elected officials (municipal and state-level)

Local education authorities

Community-based orgs. addressing prevention 

Treatment and recovery

Local public health and healthcare providers

Law enforcement

Other coalitions

High-priority populations/target populations*

*(e.g., individuals with low socioeconomic status, veterans, families with a history of SUD, refugees, asylee or immigrant communities, Tribal communities, LGBTQ+ individuals, those with mental health diagnoses, and pregnant people)

The coalition meets quarterly (January, April, July, October)

Gardiner Area Thrives

Gardiner Area Thrives is a coalition of volunteers from Gardiner, Pittston, Randolph, & West Gardiner creating communities where youth thrive. Members include youth, parents, school employees, organization and business representatives, and other community members.

Gardiner Area Thrives serves youth through collaborative projects like these:

  • Community Engagement with Gardiner Area High School

  • Drug Take Back Day

  • Community Mapping with the Gardiner Keystone Club at the Boys & Girls Club

  • Red Ribbon Week

  • Student PRIDE Art Project

  • Fight Substance Misuse with Boys and Girls Club of the Kennebec Valley

  • The Yellow Tulip Project: Growing Hope
